Thyroid Cancer Treatment involves various approaches depending on the type and stage of the cancer, as well as the overall health of the patient. The thyroid, a small gland at the base of the neck, produces hormones that regulate metabolism, and thyroid cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably within the gland. There are four main types of thyroid cancer: papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic. Treatment plans are tailored according to the specific type and how far the cancer has spread.
The most common form of treatment for thyroid cancer is surgery, particularly for early-stage cancers. This usually involves a thyroidectomy, which is the removal of part or all of the thyroid gland. If the entire gland is removed (total thyroidectomy), patients will need lifelong thyroid hormone replacement therapy to maintain normal hormone levels in the body. If the cancer is confined to one part of the gland, a lobectomy (removal of one lobe of the thyroid) may be performed, which can sometimes preserve part of the gland’s function. During surgery, nearby lymph nodes may also be removed if there is evidence that the cancer has spread to these nodes.
