Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job,” is a surgical procedure to alter the shape, size, or structure of the nose. It can be performed for cosmetic reasons, to enhance facial harmony, or for medical purposes, such as correcting breathing issues caused by structural defects.
The surgery can be performed using two primary techniques: open rhinoplasty or closed rhinoplasty. In an open rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes an incision along the columella (the tissue between the nostrils), allowing for better visibility and access to the nasal structures, which is especially useful for more complex cases. In a closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nostrils, resulting in no visible scarring, though this method may limit the surgeon’s access in more complicated cases. Once the incisions are made, the surgeon can reshape the bone, cartilage, and soft tissues of the nose to achieve the desired outcome. This might involve reducing the size of the nasal bridge, reshaping the tip, adjusting the angle between the nose and the upper lip, or improving nasal symmetry.
